Sae-Ren Beauty Expansion in Orchard and Heartlands: What Consumers Need to Know

If you have walked through Orchard Gateway Emerald or bustling heartland hubs like Toa Payoh and Ang Mo Kio recently, you may have noticed the minimalist, high-end storefront of SAE-REN Beauty Lounge. With its promise of premium Korean-inspired rituals and high-tech wellness, Sae-Ren is the newest face in Singapore’s competitive aesthetic market.

However, beneath the polished "Glass Skin" promises, SAE-REN shares a corporate umbrella with DNA Brands Co. (Pte. Ltd.), a parent company currently under significant regulatory scrutiny from the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE).

The Connection: Sae-Ren, Beautique, and DNA Brands Co.

SAE-REN Beauty Lounge is part of the DNA Brands Co. portfolio, which includes other familiar retail names such as Beautique (or Beautiq), The Mineral Boutique, and Jingran. While Sae-Ren positions itself as a luxury MedSpa, it operates within the same corporate ecosystem that has recently drawn a high volume of consumer disputes.

In October 2025, CASE issued a formal alert regarding DNA Brands Co. following 53 consumer complaints involving nearly $980,000 in disputed transactions. One notable case involved a staggering charge of over $370,000 for beauty packages.

Why the CASE Alert Matters: The Refusal of the VCA

The most critical red flag for consumers is the company's response to regulatory intervention. To protect the public, CASE invited DNA Brands Co. to sign a Voluntary Compliance Agreement (VCA). This legally binding document would have committed the company to:

  • Cease all unfair trade practices (such as high-pressure selling).

  • Compensate affected consumers.

DNA Brands Co. declined to sign the VCA. As a result, CASE referred the matter to the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS) for formal investigation under the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act. DNA Brands Co. remains on the CASE Company Alert List as of early 2026.

On-the-Ground Observations: Selective Targeting?

While SAE-REN’s branding is designed to appeal to the "aesthetic" generation, anecdotal observations at sister outlets like Beautiq and Jingran suggest a different sales focus.

In high-traffic areas, staff stationed outside these shops often appear to bypass younger, tech-savvy pedestrians, the typical aesthetics focused clientele. Instead, there is a visible pattern of engaging senior citizens - a demographic CASE confirms makes up at least 40% of the complainants. These interactions often begin with the offer of a "free sample" or "trial voucher," which reportedly transitions into prolonged, high-pressure sessions once the consumer is inside the store.

Smart Consumer Tips for High-Value Beauty Deals

The expansion of SAE-REN Beauty into prime locations like Orchard Road means more Singaporeans and visiting tourists will encounter their marketing. Before committing to any long-term or high-value beauty package, keep these safety steps in mind:

  • Avoid Immediate Committments: Never sign a contract for a five-figure package on the spot. A reputable spa will allow you to take the contract home to review.

  • Identify the Parent Company: Be aware that "new" brands may be extensions of companies already on the CASE Alert List.

  • The Power of "No": You have the right to leave any premises if you feel overwhelmed by multiple staff members or aggressive sales talk.

  • Seek CaseTrust Accreditation: Always check if a beauty lounge is CaseTrust-accredited, which ensures a 5-day cooling-off period and a strict "no-selling" policy during treatments.

While the "Arctic mist" of a cryotherapy session at SAE-REN might sound refreshing, staying informed about the company's legal standing is the best way to protect your wallet and your peace of mind.

Rethinking Work in the Age of AI

Throughout history, we have seen foundational technological shifts that have fundamentally altered the nature of our economies and the structure of our workforces. The steam engine, electricity, and the internet were not just incremental improvements; they were enabling layers upon which new industries and new ways of operating were built.

Today, we stand at the precipice of a similar transformation with Artificial Intelligence. The widespread discourse is dominated by a narrative of replacement and job loss. I believe this is a fundamental misreading of the situation. The more potent and immediate impact of AI is not the obsolescence of the human worker, but a radical restructuring of work itself.

For business leaders and professionals, the imperative is not to fear AI, but to develop a framework for integrating it to drive productivity and unlock new value. This can be understood across three distinct layers of impact.

1. The Automation of "Toil"

First, AI is rapidly commoditizing low-value, repetitive tasks, what we can call "toil." This is the administrative friction that consumes a significant portion of a knowledge worker's day. Consider the hours spent transcribing meeting notes, drafting routine correspondence, or manually searching for information within vast document repositories.

Generative AI platforms are now automating this layer of work. They can produce meeting summaries with action items, draft context-aware emails, and extract key data points from dense reports in seconds. This is not about replacing the individual; it is about eliminating the least productive parts of their role, freeing up human capital for higher-order thinking. The ROI here is immediate and substantial.

2. The Augmentation of the Expert

The second, and perhaps more powerful, layer is augmentation. AI is evolving into a "co-pilot" for experts, enhancing their capabilities rather than replacing their judgment.

A financial analyst can use an AI to process datasets at a scale previously unimaginable, identifying patterns and anomalies to inform their strategic recommendations. A marketing professional can use generative tools to create dozens of campaign concepts and visuals in minutes, allowing them to focus on strategy and market fit rather than manual execution. In this model, the AI handles the "what" and the "how," while the human expert remains firmly in control of the "why." This creates a significant leverage effect on existing talent, allowing our best people to be exponentially more effective.

3. The Imperative to Redefine "Skill"

The logical consequence of the first two layers is that our definition of valuable skills must change. When execution and information recall are automated, the premium on human ability shifts decisively.

The skills that will define the future of work are:
  • Problem Framing: The ability to ask the right questions of the AI. The quality of the output is directly tied to the quality of the prompt.
  • Critical Thinking & Synthesis: The capacity to evaluate AI-generated outputs, identify biases, and synthesize information from multiple sources to form a cohesive strategy.
  • Interpersonal & Collaborative Abilities: As routine tasks are automated, the value of leadership, empathy, negotiation, and complex stakeholder management will only increase.
For organisations, this presents a clear mandate for aggressive reskilling and upskilling. For individuals, the responsibility is to transition from being executors of tasks to being strategic thinkers and creative problem-solvers.

The AI revolution is not a future event; it is happening now. Viewing it as a simple tool is insufficient. We must recognize it as a new, foundational layer of our digital infrastructure. The companies and individuals who understand this and actively redesign their workflows and skillsets around it will be the ones who lead in the coming decade.

Adam Khoo vs. Chris Terry: Are Wealth Academy and IM Academy Two Sides of the Same Coin?

Adam Khoo and Chris Terry are two of the most recognised names in online trading education. Adam Khoo through his Singapore-based Wealth Academy, and Chris Terry via the now-rebranded IM Mastery Academy (now IYOVIA). On the surface, they could not be more different. Adam Khoo, from a privileged background tied to the Khoo Teck Puat banking family, markets himself as a disciplined investor and educator. Chris Terry, from the Bronx, built his fortune as a forex trader and created a global following with high-energy motivation and MLM tactics. But dig deeper, and the parallels become hard to ignore.

Both men promote the dream of financial freedom through self-development and online trading. They sell systems and mindsets as the keys to success which is often framed with luxury visuals and personal transformation stories. And both platforms monetise that dream aggressively: IM Academy (IYOVIA) via multi-level marketing and subscription commissions; Wealth Academy through expensive courses and upsells.

Critics argue that both use hype and selective success stories to build trust. Adam Khoo’s Wealth Academy promotes fast-track trading mastery, but many retail investors will find such strategies hard to replicate. Chris Terry’s IM Academy faced a more serious backlash. The U.S. FTC sued Chris Terry and IM Academy in 2025, alleging it was a deceptive pyramid scheme. While Adam Khoo has not faced such legal actions, his marketing style mirrors the same aspirational blueprint albeit with a more polished tone.

In both ecosystems, the founder becomes the brand. Adam Khoo’s seminars and YouTube presence are central to his authority while Chris Terry’s charisma and team-building drive IYOVIA’s culture. Followers don’t just buy education, they buy into a movement.

So, is Adam Khoo just a cleaner, more compliant version of Chris Terry? The styles differ. The platforms look distinct. But the foundation, i.e. mindset, marketing, and monetizing aspiration, is strikingly familiar.

For anyone researching Adam Khoo, Wealth Academy, Chris Terry, or IM Mastery Academy, it is worth looking past the branding and asking: what am I really buying into?

Cancelling My U.S. Travel Insurance with a Full Refund

When I was scheduled for a work trip to the U.S. recently, I did not want to take chances, especially when I planned to extend my trip. Even though my company had insurance, I bought an additional personal travel policy for those just in case.

But plans changed after I have done all the preparations. The trip was scrapped a month to departure.

So there I was: stuck with a unnecessary travel insurance plan, wondering if I could get my money back.

I Emailed First… and Heard Nothing

I did what most people would these days and emailed the insurer. Included my policy number, date of purchase, and wrote a short note saying the trip was cancelled and no claims were made.

Then I waited. And waited. No reply.

I Called - Just in Time

As the originally planned date for the trip drew closer, I finally called the hotline.

The rep was helpful. She confirmed the email address that I had contacted earlier and the policy number. Within a short time, she confirmed the cancellation and that a refund is on the way!

Moral of the story? Do not rely solely on email when the clock is ticking.

Final Thoughts

Plans can change and mine did. However, by simply making a call, I avoided wasting money on unused coverage.

If your trip gets cancelled, do not just shrug it off - you might be eligible for a full refund too. Call.

Remembering Barbie Hsu (徐熙媛)

The news of Barbie Hsu's passing has left a gaping hole in the hearts of her fans worldwide.  It feels surreal, like a bad dream we cannot wake up from.  To think that such a vibrant, talented woman, so full of life, has been taken from us so suddenly by influenza... it is simply heartbreaking.  We, her fans, are reeling.

For those who don't know, Barbie Hsu (徐熙媛), or "Big S" as we affectionately called her, was more than just a beautiful face. She was a force of nature.  Her performances, whether in front of the camera or on stage, were captivating.  She poured her heart and soul into everything she did, and it showed.  We were drawn to her charisma, her strength, and her undeniable talent.  She was an inspiration to so many of us.

Barbie Hsu is best known for her leading role as Shan Cai (杉菜) in the hit 2001 Taiwanese drama series Meteor Garden (流星花園) where she played opposite Jerry Yan (言承旭) as Daoming Si (道明寺).

To lose her like this, to a seemingly "common" illness like the flu, makes the tragedy even more poignant.  It's a stark reminder of how fragile life can be, and how even someone as seemingly vibrant and healthy as Barbie could be taken from us so quickly.  It makes the grief feel even sharper.

In the wake of this devastating news, many of us are sharing our favourite memories of Barbie. We’re re-watching her dramas, listening to her music, and remembering the joy she brought into our lives.  Her smile, her laughter, her undeniable presence – these are the things we hold onto now.  We celebrate her life and mourn her loss.

While some discussions are happening about the potential impact of COVID-19 on influenza and similar illnesses, right now, for many of us fans, the focus is on Barbie. We remember her, we cherish her work, and we grieve the future we won't get to share with her.  Her light may have been extinguished too soon, but the memories she created, the joy she shared, will live on in the hearts of her fans forever.  Rest in peace, Big S. You will be deeply missed.

Apple Settles Siri Class Action Lawsuit for $95 Million

In a surprising turn of events, Apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle a class action lawsuit over allegations that its voice assistant, Siri, was recording private conversations without users' consent. The lawsuit, filed back in 2019, claimed that Siri activated and recorded conversations even when users hadn't said the trigger phrase "Hey Siri".

The plaintiffs in the case, Lopez v. Apple Inc., alleged that Apple's devices recorded private conversations and shared these recordings with third-party contractors. Some users reported that mentioning specific brands like Air Jordan sneakers and Olive Garden restaurants led to targeted ads for those products. Others claimed that private discussions with doctors were also recorded and used for advertising purposes.

While Apple has denied any wrongdoing, the company decided to settle the lawsuit to avoid a prolonged legal battle. In a statement, Apple emphasized that it has always prioritized user privacy and that the settlement does not imply any admission of guilt.

The proposed settlement, which is awaiting approval from a federal judge in Oakland, California, covers users who owned Siri-enabled devices from September 17, 2014, to December 31, 2024. Class members could receive up to $20 per Siri-enabled device, such as iPhones and Apple Watches. The total payout is a small fraction of Apple's profits, but it's a significant acknowledgment of the privacy concerns raised by users.

This settlement comes at a time when tech companies are under increasing scrutiny for their data privacy practices. Apple, known for its strong stance on privacy, has faced criticism for allegedly not living up to its promises. The case highlights the challenges tech companies face in balancing innovation with user privacy.

If the settlement is approved, affected users will have the opportunity to file claims and receive compensation. The case also serves as a reminder for consumers to be vigilant about their privacy settings and the permissions they grant to voice assistants.

In the end, this lawsuit and settlement underscore the importance of transparency and accountability in the tech industry. As we continue to integrate smart devices into our daily lives, it's crucial to stay informed and proactive about our digital privacy.

The Quadrantids Meteor Shower: A Cosmic Firework Display

When you think of celestial events, images of dazzling meteor showers probably come to mind. One of the year's first and often overlooked cosmic displays is the Quadrantids meteor shower. This spectacular event takes place in early January, illuminating the winter sky with a burst of streaking meteors that leave onlookers in awe.

The Quadrantids meteor shower is named after the now-defunct constellation Quadrans Muralis, which was created by the French astronomer Jérôme Lalande in 1795. The constellation no longer exists and its stars are now part of Boötes. The Quadrantids are one of the most intense meteor showers, capable of producing over 100 meteors per hour at their peak.

The source of the Quadrantids is believed to be the asteroid 2003 EH1, which is thought to be a piece of a comet that broke apart several centuries ago. As Earth passes through the trail of debris left by the asteroid, these tiny fragments enter our atmosphere and burn up, creating the brilliant meteors we see.

The Quadrantids peak typically occurs around January 3rd to 4th. The best time to catch the show is usually just before dawn, when the sky is at its darkest and the radiant point (the spot where the meteors appear to originate) is high in the sky.

So where should you go to get the best view? Here are a few top spots:

Rural Areas: Any location far from city lights will give you a better chance of seeing more meteors. Find a dark spot, preferably with an unobstructed view of the horizon.

National Parks: Parks like Joshua Tree in California or Big Bend in Texas offer excellent stargazing opportunities due to their minimal light pollution and expansive skies.

Mountaintops: Higher elevations can provide clearer skies and better visibility. If you have a safe and accessible mountaintop nearby, it's worth the trek.

Deserts: Places like the Atacama Desert in Chile or the Mojave Desert in the U.S. are renowned for their dark skies and are ideal for meteor shower viewing.

Wherever you choose to set up camp, make sure to bring a warm blanket, some hot cocoa, and a reclining chair or a cozy spot to lie back and watch the sky. Be patient and give your eyes some time to adjust to the darkness.

Don't forget, meteor watching is a bit like fishing - you need to be patient. The meteors tend to come in waves, and it's not uncommon to have several minutes of nothing followed by a sudden burst of activity. Keep your eyes peeled, and resist the temptation to check your phone too often, as the screen's brightness can disrupt your night vision.

Remember, no special equipment is needed to enjoy this celestial event. Just your eyes and a bit of curiosity will do. So, mark your calendar and prepare to be dazzled by one of the best-kept secrets of the night sky. The Quadrantids meteor shower is a cosmic firework show you don't want to miss!

Bluesky Soars in Popularity

Bluesky's popularity is on the rise due to several distinctive features and shifts in the social media landscape. Firstly, its decentralized protocol grants users greater control over their data and interactions, which is a stark contrast to the centralized model of X.com that has faced criticism over privacy concerns.

The platform's user-centric approach emphasizes privacy and community-driven content moderation, appealing to users who are dissatisfied with traditional, algorithm-based moderation practices. Bluesky also offers innovative features such as the ability to create customised feeds and follow specific topics or interests, enhancing user engagement and personalization.

As many users seek alternatives to mainstream platforms like Musk's X.com, which has undergone significant changes under his new management, Bluesky presents itself as a fresh option that aligns with values of privacy and community. The backing of Jack Dorsey, a reputable figure in the tech community, further attracts early adopters eager to explore new social networking paradigms.

Moreover, Bluesky has been reported to provide a more enjoyable user experience, particularly in terms of interface design and community interactions, compared to X.com. By capitalizing on these strengths, Bluesky is successfully carving out a niche in the competitive social media landscape, appealing to users looking for platforms that prioritize privacy and user empowerment.

With the BlueSky experience being comparable to the widely Twitter. It is only a matter of time being advertisers who have distanced themselves from Musk's X.com start signing on with BlueSky. Expect to see BlueSky continue its pickup in popularity and more of the people around you joining the network. Growth will be exponential!

Racist Text Messages Spark Widespread Fear and Investigation

A series of deeply troubling racist text messages aimed at Black Americans across the United States has raised alarm, sparking investigations by federal and state authorities. These messages—vile and reminiscent of the language of slavery — began circulating shortly after the recent US presidential election, instructing recipients to report to a “plantation” to “pick cotton.” While the wording of these messages can vary slightly, the message itself is shockingly consistent. In most cases, recipients are told that they have been “chosen” to go to a nearby plantation to pick cotton, with some even claiming that a van will pick them up for the "job". The messages seem to go out of their way to provoke fear, with some recipients being told to prepare for searches when they arrive. These messages have been reported in more than 20 states — Alabama, North Carolina, Virginia, New York, California, and others. What is even more disturbing is that they have targeted both students and professionals alike. In some cases, the recipients are young people, leading many to worry about the psychological toll these messages are having, especially on the youths. The FBI has now taken the lead on investigating these messages, with assistance from the Department of Justice and other agencies. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has also condemned the messages, calling them wholly unacceptable. Authorities are working to track the origins of these texts, but the use of untraceable messaging services like TextNow has made the process more difficult. Even so, the need to identify and hold accountable those responsible for spreading this hatred is urgent. These are not just crude pranks; they are part of a growing pattern of racial harassment, and there is a real fear among many that this kind of behavior will only escalate unless stopped. Leaders within the civil rights community spoke out swiftly. Derrick Johnson, president of the NAACP, condemned the messages as clear evidence of the rise in racist rhetoric following the election. In the wake of these messages, many recipients have expressed a mixture of shock, fear, and disbelief. Some say they worry for their own safety; others say the emotional toll these messages take, particularly on young people, could be long-lasting. There is no doubt these messages are a form of intimidation, and it is clear that the impact is being felt far and wide. For many, it is another reminder of the ugly realities of racism in America — realities that many had hoped would be in the past. The timing of these messages, which began circulating shortly after the reelection of Donald Trump, has sparked speculation about the role the political climate may have played in their rise. While Trump’s campaign has denied any involvement, many critics argue that his divisive rhetoric and the emboldening of certain hate groups during his tenure has had a lasting impact. Is it possible that these messages are a direct result of the toxic political atmosphere that has dominated the United States for the past several years? While the investigation is still ongoing, one thing is clear: the spread of these racist messages highlights the dangerous undercurrent of hate that continues to simmer in this country, regardless of who is in office. As the investigations unfold, the question remains: what does this say about the state of racial relations in the United States today? This is not just about a few people sending crude messages — they are part of a larger pattern of hate and intimidation that has been growing in recent years. And while the authorities are working to track down those responsible, the truth is this: the root causes of racism and hate is addressed, incidents like this will continue to crop up. For now, the most important thing is that those responsible for sending these messages are found and held accountable. But we also need to take a hard look at the culture that allows such hatred to flourish, especially in a time when so many are already vulnerable. These racist text messages are more than just words on a screen. They represent a very real and frightening reality for many Black Americans — and they remind us that the fight for racial equality is far from over. The investigation is still ongoing, and we must demand that those responsible face consequences. But we also need to think critically about how we can address the deeper issues of racism and hate that continue to plague our society. The time to act is now — before more lives are harmed.

Mediacorp's Star Search

The return of Mediacorp's Star Search in 2024 is a significant development within Singapore's media landscape, particularly as local audiences are increasingly consuming less free-to-air programming. This trend poses challenges for traditional television formats, but Star Search aims to adapt and thrive in this changing environment.

Star Search, which first aired in 1988, has been a cornerstone of Singapore's entertainment industry, successfully launching the careers of numerous local celebrities. After a five-year hiatus, its 12th edition kicked off with open auditions and a structured competition format, to culminate in a live finale on November 24, 2024. The show not only seeks to discover new talent but also features a robust mentorship program designed to prepare contestants for the competitive entertainment industry.

Recent statistics indicate a decline in viewership for local free-to-air programs, as audiences gravitate towards streaming services and international content platforms. This shift has prompted traditional broadcasters like Mediacorp to innovate their content offerings and distribution methods4

To remain relevant, Mediacorp is leveraging Star Search as part of a broader strategy to engage viewers through multi-platform content delivery. This includes:

Digital Integration: The show will be available on various platforms, including streaming services like mewatch and social media channels, allowing for greater accessibility and engagement with younger audiences who prefer on-demand content4

Interactive Elements: By incorporating audience participation through voting mechanisms and social media interactions, Star Search aims to create a more immersive viewing experience that resonates with contemporary viewers4

Quality Content Production: Mediacorp emphasizes the production of high-quality content tailored to audience preferences, which is critical in an era where attention spans are shorter and competition is fierce4

Despite the challenges posed by declining viewership for traditional formats, Star Search retains its relevance by:

Nurturing Local Talent: The program continues to play a vital role in discovering and nurturing local talent, which is essential for sustaining Singapore's entertainment ecosystem. It provides aspiring artists with exposure and opportunities that might otherwise be inaccessible

Cultural Significance: As a long-standing institution in Singapore’s media landscape, Star Search not only entertains but also contributes to the cultural fabric of the nation by showcasing diverse talents and stories that reflect Singaporean society

Engaging New Audiences: By adapting its format and reach, Star Search can attract new viewers who may not typically engage with traditional television formats. This adaptability is crucial for maintaining its legacy while appealing to modern sensibilities

While the decline in local free-to-air programming poses challenges, the return of Star Search represents an opportunity for Mediacorp to innovate and engage audiences effectively. By focusing on talent development and leveraging digital platforms, Star Search aims to remain a relevant and influential force in Singapore's entertainment industry.

Electric Vehicles Make Poor Financial Sense

Looking to buy a car recently and after thinking hard about it, there are several arguments why purchasing an electric vehicle (EV) may not be the most financially sensible decision right now:

1. Higher Upfront Costs

Initial Purchase Price: EVs typically have higher upfront costs compared to their ICE counterparts. While some may qualify for tax incentives, these do not always offset the significant price difference.

Premium Models: Many popular EVs come from luxury brands, which  further inflate the initial investment.

2. Charging Infrastructure and Costs

Limited Charging Stations: Depending on location, the lack of convenient charging stations can lead to range anxiety and inconvenience.

Home Charging Setup: Installing a home charging station can be costly, especially if electrical upgrades are needed, adding to the overall expense.

3. Battery Replacement Costs

Longevity Concerns: EV batteries can degrade over time, and replacement costs can be substantial, sometimes ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 depending on the model.

Warranties: While many manufacturers offer warranties on batteries, these often only cover a limited number of years or miles, leading to potential future costs.

4. Resale Value

Depreciation: EVs can depreciate much faster than traditional vehicles. As technology evolves quickly and new models enter the market, older models are losing value more quickly.

Market Saturation: With many new EVs hitting the market, the resale value of existing models are declining further.

5. Insurance Costs

Higher Premiums: Insuring an EV can be more expensive due to the higher costs of repairs and replacement parts, which could negate some savings from fuel costs.

6. Electricity Costs vs. Petrol Prices

Fuel Cost Comparisons: While EVs generally save on fuel costs, fluctuating electricity prices can diminish those savings, particularly if charging during peak hours.

Maintenance Costs: Although EVs have fewer moving parts and often require less maintenance, the savings may not be significant enough to justify the higher initial costs.

7. Limited Range for Some Needs

Daily Driving Needs: If you frequently travel long distances, the current range limitations of many EVs could be a significant drawback, necessitating a secondary vehicle for longer trips.

8. Environmental Considerations

Battery Production: The environmental impact of manufacturing EV batteries, including resource extraction and processing, raises questions about the overall sustainability of EV ownership.

While EVs offer many benefits, such as reduced emissions and potential fuel savings, the financial implications currently do not support a clear advantage over traditional vehicles. Until upfront costs decrease, charging infrastructure improves, and battery longevity is assured, it will make more financial sense to stick with conventional ICE vehicles for now.

LinkedIn Tapping Personal Data for AI Training

Security experts and consumers alike are quite concerned about recent revisions to LinkedIn's data gathering policy. The platform now permits the training of AI models using user-generated content - without explicit user authorisation. Many believe their right to privacy is being violated by this lack of transparency.

Businesses must put user awareness and consent first as AI continues to transform our online experiences. Consumers should be informed in a transparent and honest manner about how their data is used. In addition to building trust, this gives people the power to decide for themselves what privacy means.

Users on LinkedIn have expressed their dissatisfaction and called attention to the necessity for data practices to be transparent. Companies need to make sure consumers are aware of their rights and may readily opt out of data sharing when they so want in order to foster a safer online environment.

If you have a LinkedIn account, do verify that you have updated the settings in accordance with your preferences on how your personal data can be used.

Why the Former President Obama Firmly Endorses Kamala Harris

In the world of American politics, endorsements can be as telling as policy positions. When former President Barack Obama lends his support to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, it’s not merely a nod to his successors but a calculated endorsement reflecting deep-seated beliefs and strategic foresight. Here’s why Obama’s backing is significant and what it reveals about his vision for the nation.

A Longstanding Bond and Shared Vision

The relationship between Barack Obama and Joe Biden is more than just a footnote in political history; it's a testament to the power of collaboration and mutual respect. Obama’s endorsement of Biden stems from their robust partnership during the Obama administration. Biden’s tenure as Vice President wasn’t just a supporting role; it was a position that required him to navigate the complexities of governance alongside Obama. This close working relationship forged a bond that transcends mere political alignment.

Obama’s support for Biden is also a nod to policy continuity. Both leaders champion similar stances on healthcare reform, climate action, and economic recovery. For Obama, Biden’s policies represent a continuation of the progressive agenda that shaped his presidency. The endorsement signals confidence in Biden’s ability to carry forward a vision for progress that Obama believes is crucial for the country’s future.

Kamala Harris: A Historic and Strategic Choice

When it comes to Kamala Harris, Obama’s support is equally compelling. Harris is a historic figure—America’s first Black and South Asian Vice President. For Obama, a leader who himself broke barriers as the first Black President, supporting Harris is a natural extension of his commitment to diversity and representation. Harris’s groundbreaking role is not just symbolic but a substantive shift towards a more inclusive leadership landscape.

Obama’s endorsement of Harris also underscores a shared commitment to key progressive issues. Her track record on criminal justice reform, healthcare, and climate policy aligns closely with the values Obama has long advocated. Harris’s experience as Attorney General and U.S. Senator adds a layer of competence and practical insight that Obama clearly values.

The Power of Unity

In supporting both Biden and Harris, Obama is also endorsing their partnership. The Biden-Harris team represents a unity ticket that aims to bridge divides within the Democratic Party and across the broader electorate. Obama’s endorsement reflects his belief in their combined ability to advance a cohesive agenda, essential for navigating the complexities of contemporary American politics.

In essence, Obama’s backing of Biden and Harris is not merely about endorsing individuals but about endorsing a vision for America. It’s about continuity in policy, commitment to diversity, and the strategic capability to unite and lead. For Obama, supporting Biden and Harris is both a personal and political endorsement, rooted in a deep-seated belief in their shared ability to drive the country forward.

Paris 2024 vs. Earlier Olympics

The Paris 2024 Olympics has been lauded for its innovative approach to planning and execution. Let's compare it to previous Games and identify both its strengths and areas for improvement.

Positive Aspects of Paris 2024 Planning

Sustainability Focus: A hallmark of Paris 2024 is its strong emphasis on sustainability. The organizers have committed to halving the Games' carbon footprint compared to previous editions. This includes using renewable energy, minimizing waste, and prioritizing public transportation.

Legacy Planning: Paris 2024 has placed significant emphasis on the long-term benefits of the Games. The plan includes repurposing existing venues, investing in public infrastructure, and developing programs for local communities.

Urban Olympics Concept: In contrast to previous Games that often involved constructing new stadiums in remote locations, Paris 2024 is embracing an urban Olympics. This approach maximizes the use of existing infrastructure and integrates the Games into the city's fabric.

Innovation and Technology: The organizers are leveraging technology to enhance the spectator experience, improve logistics, and promote accessibility. This includes using digital platforms for ticketing, transportation, and information sharing.

Areas for Improvement

While Paris 2024 represents a significant step forward, there are still areas where improvements can be made:

Cost Control: Despite efforts to utilize existing infrastructure, the overall cost of hosting the Olympics remains a concern. While Paris 2024 has made strides in this area, there's always potential for further cost-cutting measures without compromising the quality of the Games.

Accessibility and Inclusivity: While Paris 2024 has made efforts to improve accessibility for people with disabilities, there's still room for enhancement. Ensuring that the Games are truly inclusive for all requires ongoing attention to detail and innovation.

Local Community Engagement: While the organizers have emphasized the importance of engaging the local community, there's always the risk of displacement and gentrification associated with large-scale events. Continued efforts are needed to ensure that the benefits of the Games are shared equitably among residents.

In conclusion, the planning for Paris 2024 represents a significant advancement in Olympic hosting. By prioritizing sustainability, legacy, and urban integration, the organizers have set a new standard for future Games. However, addressing challenges related to cost control, accessibility, and community engagement will be crucial for the long-term success of the event.

COE and the Electric Vehicles

Singapore's Certificate of Entitlement (COE) system has seen some fluctuations in recent months. After reaching historic highs in 2023, COE premiums did experience a welcome decline in early 2024. However, current trends suggest a stabilization or even a slight increase in COE prices. This makes the decision of buying a new car, especially an Electric Vehicle (EV), more complex.

EVs: Still a Viable Option, But Do Your Research

Despite the recent rise in COE prices, EVs remain a compelling alternative for many drivers in Singapore. The government's continued commitment to cleaner transportation, along with attractive incentives and lower running costs, makes EVs a serious contender.

Considering the Total Cost of Ownership

The decision to buy an EV hinges on your individual needs and finances. While the initial COE price may not be the lowest, consider these factors:

  • Upfront Cost: EVs generally have a higher initial price tag compared to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. However, the recent COE price volatility makes budgeting for an EV purchase more challenging.
  • Running Costs: EVs boast significantly lower running costs due to cheaper electricity compared to petrol. Additionally, they require less maintenance.
  • Government Incentives: The Singaporean government offers various incentives for EV ownership, including tax rebates and grants which can significantly offset the initial cost.

Making an Informed Decision

Carefully research different EV models and compare them to their ICE counterparts. Factor in the potential rise in COE prices and weigh the upfront cost of an EV against the long-term savings on running costs and government incentives. This will help you make an informed decision that aligns with your budget and driving needs.

WHO Announces End of COVID19 Pandemic

Promising COVID19 vaccines! Lower numbers of new infections! COVID19 is now under control! COVID19 cure found!

Headlines that we will love to see but reality is far less rosy.

COVID19 is a virus.

A strain of coronavirus not unlike past virus such as SARS in 2003, MERS in 2012. Years have passed and no vaccine, no cure has been found for SARS or MERS. The same is likely to happen for COVID19.

The optimistic put hopes on the huge efforts to find a working vaccine but what if  the end state is that the virus is here to stay?

The virus is selective. Many infected are just asymptomatic or with mild symptoms, carriers whom go on to keep the spread alive. These are usually the young/healthy ones with no underlying issues. The ones whom really suffer are the older/weaker.

At the end, perhaps we need to come to terms that it will remain as commonplace as influenza. People will die if they do not take care of their health. Life expectancies will be lowered as weakened elderly fail to overcome infections.

Life will have to go on. Hope will survive.

Singapore Presidential Election 2017

Will this election be a reserved one for the "Malay" community? While Dr Tan Cheng Bock's initial case for an "open" election has been dismissed, it is still up for appeal.

Should the reserved election proceed, the likely Presidential candidates for 2017 so far are:

  1. Mr Salleh Marican (CEO, Second Chance Properties)
  2. Mr Farid Khan Kaim Khan (Chairman, Bourbon Offshore Asia Pacific)
  3. Mdm Halimah Yacob (Speaker of Parliament)

Mr Salleh Marican
He is of Indian heritage and lacks fluency in the Malay language.

Additionally, calculations by The Straits Times puts Second Chance’s average shareholder equity over the past three years between $254.3 million and $263.25 million, missing the eligibility criteria of at least $500 million in shareholders’ equity, on average, for the most recent three financial years.

Mr Farid Khan Kaim Khan
The question will likely hinge on whether he is "Malay" enough to contest in the Reserved Presidential Elections. It is noted that his race is indicated as “Pakistani” on his identity card,

Mdm Halimah Yacob
She has yet to confirm her interest to run for the upcoming Reserved Presidential Elections but some quarters have questioned her Malay-ness, noting she has an "Indian-Muslim father...who died when she was eight years old". Is Mdm Halimah Yacob Indian then?

It would have been much preferable to have never tried establishing a Reserved Presidential Election so that potential contenders are able to truly contest on an equal, meritocracy basis.

Should the 2017 Reserved Presidential Election come to pass, it is likely to be remembered as:

  1. Clouded by the perception of it being an attempt to block Dr Tan Cheng Bock from becoming President
  2. Reinforcing the belief that Singapore's minority races still require assistance regardless of how capable they are

The best case scenario for Singapore's 2017 President Elections that I hope for now is that Dr Tan Cheng Bock's appeal is heard by the courts and that the courts decide that the upcoming Elections should be made an "open" one for all races.

  1. Dr Tan Cheng Bock likely continues to be ineligible because of the $500 million in shareholders’ equity criteria
  2. "Malay" candidates still contend for the Elected Presidency
  3. A "Malay" candidate wins in an Open Presidential Election

The intent of Reserved Presidential Elections may sound good but is fundamentally flawed. Having to set up a committee to decide if a candidate is a member of the community goes against our nation building, our pledge of regardless of race, language or religion. It also opens up a host of possibilities such as inter-racial marriages, adoption, etc that further complicate the entire process.

The President is supposed to be an unifying figure, Singaporean first before being Chinese, Malay, Indian or Eurasian. Elections are by nature divisive amongst the candidates' supporters but let us not let it divide us further along other lines.

#KamiTidakTakut

#KamiTidakTakut. We are not afraid. We should not be afraid.

The senseless bombings in Jakarta is yet another terror event that has hit civilian populations going about their daily routines.

The use of terror, the use of fear by these extremists to try to coerce the majority to bow to their demands is despicable.

Humankind should be focused on advancing us as a whole. It is uplifting to see the whole coming together and pool resources to help in events such as the Boxing Day Tsunami, Nepal earthquake, Christchurch earthquake, Southeast Asian Haze, Search for MH370, etc.

Let us not be afraid but aware. Be prepared.

Be aware that there are some bad people whom are intent on making life difficult for the rest of us. Be prepared to rally our communities and stand together should an attack happen near our homes. Have courage to stand up and let terrorists know that their cowardly attacks alienate them further from the rest of us. We should not be afraid. We are not afraid. Kami tidak takut.

Yang Yin (杨寅) and Weng Yandan (翁燕丹)

The one news that got people up in arms recently is the supposed scam by Yang Yin (杨寅). Yang Yin is supposed to have tried to take over Madam Chung Khin Chun's assets.

Yang Yin's wife, Weng Yandan (翁燕丹) had already returned to their home (瑞祺公寓) in Hangzhou (莫干山路, 杭州), China,  after Yang Yin was called in by the police for questioning. In recent media interviews, she asserted that she continues to have faith in the integrity of Yang Yin despite the ongoing lawsuits and police reports filed against Yang Yin.

While the court cases have yet to really proceed, the reports so far have consistently cast Yang Yin in a negative light. Yang Yin has been accused of numerous crimes and

TOTO Changes from 6/45 to 6/49

Singapore Pools is changing the TOTO lottery game from 6/45 to 6/49 from 7th Oct 2014. With that change, the betting costs are going to go up though a larger top prize of $1 million is being dangled.

Under the 6/45 TOTO game, the odds of hitting the jackpot is 1 in 8,145,060 and winning the top prize is close to impossible.

With the revamp, the calculations by Singapore Pools put the odds of winning the jackpot at 1 in 13.98 million with the odds of winning any prize at 1 in 54. Statistically, it is an extremely long shot to win the top prize.

The calculations are abstract for the reality that faces punter is more simplistically put as being based on the odds of 1 in 2... You either win or not win.

The best way to anchor winning expectations is perhaps juxtaposing it with concrete examples. Centre for Addiction and Mental Health from Canada put it very nicely for the 6/49 game.
  • A person has a 1 in 3 million chance of sighting an UFO. That's almost 5 times more likely than winning the jackpot.
  • You are more likely to die of a flesh eating disease (1 in 1 million) than winning the lottery. That's 14 times more likely than winning the jackpot.
  • You are more likely to be killed by lightening (1 in 56,439) than win the lottery. That's almost 250 times more likely than winning the jackpot.
  • You are more likely to be killed in a traffic accident driving 16 km to purchase a ticket than winning the jackpot
  • Imagine you are standing blindfolded on a football field holding a pin. A friend has released an ant on the field. Your chance of piercing that ant with your pin is about one in 14 million, the same odds of winning the Lotto 6/49 jackpot.
  • The odds of winning the top prize at maximum coin play on the slot machines ranges from 1 in 4,096 to 1 in 33,554,000.

A totally rational person should then try his luck on lottery games with better odds. For sanctioned games of chances in Singapore, 4D odds of winning the top prize is 1 in 10,000 while Singapore Big Sweep odds of winning the top prize is 1 in 3,500,000. Paying the $100 entry level into the Resort World Sentosa or Marina Bay Sands casinos, tables games will offer significantly better odds than the revamp TOTO game.

Of course, gamblers are never rational. Bets will still be made on TOTO to buy into the hope of lives being transformed by winning the top prize, however slim chances may be. Look to the cascading mechanism of the Singapore TOTO game, odds will improve significantly when the cascading conditions are activated.
